A newsroom files dozens of stories a day, so the home page is a hierarchy rather than a list. One lead story runs at full width, a secondary pair sits to its left, and a ranked feed of the newest six runs down the right. A reader takes in about fifteen headlines before scrolling once.
Every headline carries its section and how long ago it was filed. On a news site those two things are what a reader scans for, so they sit above the headline in a lighter weight rather than being buried underneath it.
The desktop grid collapses to a single stack on a phone, lead image first with the headline over it, then a text-and-thumbnail list. Nothing is hidden on the way down: the same sections, labels and timestamps survive the narrowest screen.
Full-text search across every story, reachable from the header on all screen sizes.

Pages are served from a LiteSpeed cache at the origin and Cloudflare in front, so a traffic spike on a breaking story does not reach PHP.
